Wakestock Day-3
by Sim Bradley 05 / 07 / 2010
As the dust settles on another year of madness, Wakestock 2010 is finished. Sunday morning started off very different to the previous two days with 36mph winds and showers that swept up tents from all over the campsite. On Pwlheli Marina the conditions were less than favourable, in fact it was outright horrendous, but with $7,000 up for 1st place there was still all to play for. The format for the second stop of the WWA World Series involved four 4-man heats with the top placing rider from each heat making it through to the 4-man final showdown.
When all was said and done it the final was made up of Dean Smith, Austin Hair, Aaron Rathy and Philip Soven who all rode incredibly well in the heats given the ferocious winds, but to be perfectly honest it was hit or miss for everyone with great riders like Nick Davies and Randall crashing hard by hitting a bad spot on the wake. As time went by the wind did start to drop off and the final commenced. Dean and Austin didn't get on as well as they had in the heats, but Rathy and Phil both had awesome rides, with Phil sticking a 720, whirly 5, crowmobe to name a few tricks, and Rathy nailed both the Leviathan and Rooftop rails along with a pete rose and indy tantrum to blind.
Later on the main stage the prize giving went out on live TV on welsh channel S4C with a huge crowd watching on site. Unfortunately for Aaron he was once again in second place and Phil Soven took home the win and the majority share of the prize purse. The results from Saturdays Pro Womens final had Amber Wing in 1st place with Nicola Butler and Robbie Rendo in second and third respectively.
This year's Wakestock has been truly magnificent, the weather was great all weekend (except for the 3-hours of the Mens Final) and everyone had a great time. The atmosphere was great and everyone partied hard to make the most of it all. There will be a full write up in the next issue of Alliance magazine, plus a recap of the Rococo Rail Jam later this week.
