Glass Butter Beach 08

by Sim Bradley
09 / 09 / 2008

These days there aren’t many things you can rely on, but every time I come away from Abersoch my body aches, I’m tired, all my clothes are wet and there are hazy memories of great times. This weekend was no different and although the weather almost cancelled the 2008 Glass Butter Beach it was another fantastic few days in Wales.

Saturday had a really bad start with 35mph easterly winds throwing waves onto the beach, so that day’s riding was obviously cancelled. To pass the time everyone caught up on some sleep from the previous nights partying and then it was back to the pub for the afternoon to get ‘prepared for night 2, this time at The Sandpiper. Another crazy session later and Sunday morning had arrived without the wind that was forecast. With flat conditions on the beach everyone mucked in to get the rails positioned ready for play at 1pm. There were some good crashes at the start of each round where everyone was still feeling rough, but the head-to-head 10-minute jam session meant the riders had time to wake up and get to work on the rails. Everyone who was expected to make it through to the Quarters did so, and it was in this round that the upset started to happen.

A usual favourite in rail comps Lee Debuse, had a shocker of a weekend and his body just wouldn’t do what he asked of it. Hamish Lowe went out to Eban Escott in the Semi’s and Dan Jordan had the ride of day nailing a sick Pete Rose off the kicker and getting tech on the rails to take out other favourite Matt Crowhurst, leaving a final of Eban against Dan. Both guys put their all in but it was Eban who came out with £200 cash, and Long Board trophy and a track day with Westfield Cars.

To close the event Alliance threw a Geeks & Nerds themed party to get the photos for our 2009 Gear Guide issue, and as you might expect it went off. The costumes were truly magnificent but there’s always the people who get confused by a theme, or in this case the guys who wish they are girls. Matty C, Dan Jordan, James Hooper, Ash Colvin and Lee Debuse all showed up in skirts, stockings, dresses and crop-tops with hats, handbags and other accessories to match. While they did look funny as hell, there’s quite clearly something wrong with those boys. For all who made the effort to come up you know how much fun this weekend was, and for those of you who couldn’t be bothered to drive up, you definitely missed out.
